This chart shows the breakdown of refining and distribution prices for diesel fuel over the last 6 months, identified on the left axis. The mustard-shaded area indicates the diesel refining margin,
also called the "Heat Crack" spread, as defined by the NYMEX products HO (heating oil) minus CL (crude oil). It is typically quoted in dollars per barrel, but this graph shows it
in $/gallon. The green-shaded area indicates the total $/gallon for diesel distribution and sales, including distributor, transport, and retailer costs and markups.
These values are calculated based on retail data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), a division of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
The lines in the chart represent the same NYMEX CL and HO daily settlement prices used to calculate the crack spread, and are identified on the right-side axis.

This chart is the same as the upper left one, but for gasoline instead of diesel. The refining margin in this case is the "Gas Crack" spread, as defined by the NYMEX products RB (RBOB gasoline) minus CL (crude oil).

Note that one barrel of crude oil is equivalent to 42 gallons, e.g. a 10 $/bbl crack spread is equal to ($10 / 42 gal) = 0.238 $/gallon.
